âExcuse me?â I said. âMason robbed a corpse?â
Gabrielle Friedkin sighed. âPaul wasnât just at the party to enjoy himself. He and I had business, and we had business with each other. I gave him a crypto wallet that stored confidential information. Mason took it off the body after Paul shot himself.â
âWhy would he do that?â
âI havenât the slightest idea. Maybe he thought it contained cryptocurrency. Paul ran that exchange app.â
âYou donât do cryptocurrency?â I asked.
âI have a small amount as part of my portfolio,â Friedkin said. âBut I donât trade it on an app.â
I smiled at her disgust. âIf not crypto, then what?â
âThatâs confidential,â Gomez said. âBut I can tell you this much. Just before Paul shot himself, I saw Mason talking to Brennan Tunney at the party.â
âWhat does that have to do with anything?â I asked.
âPerhaps nothing,â Gomez said. âAnd perhaps Brennan and Ms. Friedkin are currently rivals for a significant development in DuPage County, and Mason opportunistically took the drive because he thought it might curry favor with Tunney.â
âThatâs the very definition of a stretch,â I said to Gomez.
âTony, it doesnât matter why he took it,â Friedkin said. âIt matters that he took it. He took it, itâs mine, and it has confidential information on it that I need back. Mason canât even do anything with it. Itâs encrypted and only Paul could access it. But even having it out there is a risk I donât want to take.â
âWhich brings us back to you, Mr. Valdez,â Gomez said.
âYou were with Mason when he was dispatched,â Friedkin said. âThe police, the FBI, and Michel all believe youâre involved. And you do know about the wallet. Thatâs how you tried to entrap Michelâs employee. I donât think you have the walletââ
âThank you for that,â I said.
ââbut I donât think youâve been entirely honest about what you do know. I donât care about that. What I care about is getting it back. I suspect youâre mostly decent, Tony. But Iâm not here to appeal to your decency. Iâm here to make a deal with you.â
âWhatâs the deal?â
âTen million dollars,â Gomez said.
âFor what?â
âFor letting us know the instant Mason shows up again,â Friedkin said. âBecause I have a feeling he will show up again. And when he does, heâs going to come to you.â
âBecause Iâm his friend.â
âWe already established he has no friends. He has transactional relationships. If you think heâs your friend, thatâs nice, and itâs to his advantage. But heâs using you, Tony. I think if you go far enough down, you know that. And when you admit it to yourself, letting us know when he resurfaces isnât going to be a problem.â
âSo all I have to do is let you know heâs back, and you drop a bunch of money on me.â
âWell, no,â Gomez said. âWe need to meet with him, and we need to secure the wallet.â
ââMeet with him,ââ I repeated. âWhy do I think thatâs a euphemism?â
âMr. Valdez, we know who you are. We know you almost got a job with Chicago PD before the pandemic brought you back to the hospital.
